SQUATTER families in Kampung Manis, Prai, can look forward to their houses being repaired and renovated by the Federal Government through the Implementation and Coordination Unit (ICU).
About RM10,000 was allocated by the Government under the ICU to repair and renovate the 24 houses in the village which were selected to receive the aid.
Prai ICU officer L. Krishan said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop made the allocation when the latter visited the area in August.
“These families have been living in dire condition for the past few years.
“Some of the houses have roofs leaking, rotting planks and even the ground on which the houses are built on is sinking,” he said after visiting the area with Batu Kawan ICU coordinator A. Mohan and state MIC Youth chief J. Dhinagaran.
Krishnan, who is also state MIC secretary, said repair and renovation works started on Saturday and was expected to be completed in December.
“The Government is concerned about the plight of these squatters and wants them to live in better conditions,” he said.
Mohan said water pipes would also be installed to enable 12 poor families there to have clean water.
“Application forms have been submitted to the Penang Water Supply Corporation Sdn Bhd and plumbers have been engaged to help the families get the water supply as soon as possible,” he added.
Odd-job labourer Zurita Ibrahim, 42, who has three children aged between 13 and 19, said his house roof was leaking and whenever it rained, his house would become messy.
“I am glad and thankful to the Federal Government and to the ICU for picking my house to receive the aid,” he said.
