The children of GloryKids Nursery School, Kindergarten and Childcare in Kepong Metro Prima brought to life the magical world of fairies, sugarplums and other Christma-related characters.

This they did via a musical based on the literary work of Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann in 1816 called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

It went on to become one of the most popular ballets in the world when it was adapted by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 1892.

The musical, held at the HGH Convention Centre in Sentul for the first time, was about nine-year-old Clara (Marie Stahlbaum in the original story), whose Christmas turned magical when her uncle gave her the Nutcracker as her toy.

After defeating the Mouse King in a sword battle, the Nutcracker whisks Clara to a fantastical kingdom populated by dolls.

According to kindergarten principal Jackie Wong, the concert was held in conjunction with the chidlren's graduation and awards day.

"A lot of hard work went into the production of the musical.

"Many hours were devoted by both teachers and pupils into making the musical a success.

"It is always sad when our children leave us upon graduation, because we have come to know and love them in the two years that they have been with us.

"We will miss each and everyone one of them.

"We wish them the best, as they enter the next phase of their lives," said Wong.

Samuel, who is a pupil of a Chinese school and speaks good Mandarin, said he picked up the language over the past two years.

"My parents do not speak Mandarin, but they encourage me to learn the language," he said.

GloryKids Nursery School, Kindergarten and Childcare Centre teaches in English, Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia.

It uses the Fungates System, which has been successfully adopted by many pre-school operators throughout the country.
