LOCAL road running athlete M. Arulthevar offered tips to recreational runners who are preparing for the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) 10km Run beginning at the MPSJ Sports Complex on Dec 4.

However, Arulthevar and members of his club will not be at the starting line to join the rest of the participants from Subang Jaya for this year’s event.

“Having won here several times in the early 2000s series, I have fond memories of the event. It is unfortunate that we could not be part of the occasion this year. We have signed up for another run earlier,” he added.

For the coaching clinic at the MPSJ sports complex running track recently, Arul turned up with two other seasoned campaigners — M. Murali and S. Shela — from his club to assist and demonstrate several running drills.

The 90-minute session drew a modest turnout of 20 participants.

“It is only my first appearance conducting the clinic as a prelude to the run. It has always been fun to guide them through the paces. I am still racing but I am also taking up another role as a coach to continue my involvement in long distance running. At the moment, I am also monitoring the progress of the Federal Territories long distance athletes for the Malaysia Games next year,” Arul said.

Besides the light warm-up and stretching, Murali and Shela enlightened the participants with two tempo running exercises.

“In striving for improvement, they need variety in their training to keep it interesting. We showed them the diagonal and minute runs that they can include in their programme. They were also very keen in acquiring new knowledge and sharing their experiences in running. The discussion went on for almost 30 minutes in between the warm-up and the specific exercises. Besides learning the right running techniques, they were also concerned about injuries related to running. They wanted to know about prevention measures as well as proper treatment to nurse injuries,” said Arulthevar.

The participants also picked up a goody bags as well as cold refreshing drink each at the end of the session.

The upcoming run presented by Herbalife is jointly organised by MPSJ and Sports Intelligence while The Star is the official media partner.

For the 10km distance, the four categories are women’s and men’s open (above 18 years); men’s veteran (41 to 50 years); and men’s senior veteran (above 51 years).

Another four categories for the 7km event are boys’ and girls’ junior (13 to 17 years); women’s veteran (35 to 50 years); and women’s senior veteran (above 51 years).

In the 3km fun run, each team is required to field a child aged seven years and above teaming up two adults in action.

The organisers will also be raising funds for the Selangor Red Crescent Society.
