AS MUCH as 24ha of land in Chenderiang, Tapah have been taken over by an individual.

The land-grab was discovered in an investigation following complaints from farmers in the area.

Ten farmers claimed that the individual had been going around planting crops on parcels of land alienated to them.

Wong Yat, one of the farmers affected, said the culprit had started planting crops on a 1.9ha plot alienated to him by the state government in 2006 even before he could carry out work on it.

“Before I could clear the land and work on it, I found out that this individual had planted crops there.

“I showed him the temporary occupancy licence that was issued to me but he ignored it and continued to farm there,” Wong told reporters at a press conference in Ipoh.

The 75-year-old added that he had already lodged a police report and complained to the Batang Padang Land Office, but the individual seemed unperturbed.

Another farmer, Yunus Mohd Yusof, 51, said he had initially thought the individual was acting for a state agency.

“Going by the signboard erected on my 1.6ha plot of land, it looked as if the authorities were carrying out a project there.

“I later found out that it was not true when I checked with the authorities,” he said.

He added that the authorities had seized the individual’s machinery following complaints by him and the other farmers.

“However, three months later he was back at it,” said Yunus.

State executive councillor Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who is also Chenderiang assemblyman, assured the farmers that he would bring up the matter at the next state exco meeting for further action to be taken.
