Good news for m-cyclists

What say you on the issue below?

MOTORCYCLISTS will soon be exempted from parking fees in Penang island as the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) has approved a proposal to provide free parking spaces for motorcycles.

Council financial management sub-committee alternate chairman Tan Hun Wooi said the move was initiated to encourage more motorcyclists to park their vehicles at the proper spots.

“By not charging fees starting from 20 cents for every half hour, we hope that motorcyclists will be inclined to not park their machines haphazardly.

“The council will be adding more motorcycle parking spaces all over the island in the coming months.

“Currently we have between 2,000 and 3,000 parking spaces available on the island,” he said after a full council meeting.

Earlier during the meeting, councillor Dr Lim Mah Hui suggested that the council adopt a new approach in the annual budgeting process as a deficit of RM77mil had been projected in the council’s 2012 budget.

“The deficit is a quarter of our total budget. Therefore, we have to come up with ways to turn things around from budget deficits to budget surplus.

“The budget must be objective driven and performance based. We should also focus on reducing expenditure and at the same time come up with ways to increase revenue,” he said.
