Timely aid for festival

What say you on the issue below?

KELANA Jaya parliamentary liaison officer Ong Chong Swen recently spent time with the Indian community in the constituency in conjunction with Deepavali.

Ong presented a total of RM28,000 to 12 Indian-based non-governmental organisations and Indian temples in the constituency, which would be channelled to the less fortunate to help bring some Deepavali cheer.

In her speech, Ong noted that Deepavali is celebrated by the Indian community for different reasons.

Symbolic gesture: MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel lighting a traditional oil lamp to signify the triumph of good over evil as Ong looks on.

“For example, the Hindu celebrate Deepavali as the Festival of Lights with family members and prayers at home, while the Sikh community celebrates Deepavali as a Celebration of Freedom,” she said.

“Most importantly, the Malaysian Indian community celebrates Deepavali not only with their own community, but with their friends and neighbours of all races.

“Malaysians, irrespective of race or religion, enjoy celebrating major festivities and cultural events together.”

Ong said Malaysians should also continue caring for the less fortunate and called on everyone to provide continuous support to the underprivileged groups.
