Police to enforce EC’s directives

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein has directed the police to strictly enforce the latest by-election rules from the Election Commission (EC) such as no campaiging on polling day.

“There would not be any compromise. Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat must abide by the directives.

“I don’t want to see a repeat of Manek Urai, in Kelantan, where supporters came out in full force to do some last minute campaigning until the roads became too congested,” he said before embarking on a house-to-house campaign.

Hishamuddin, who is also an Umno vice-president, was here to assist Barisan Nasional in the Permatang Pasir by-election.

He said the police would also step up traffic enforcement and clamp down on political parties who set up booths leading to the polling centres.

“Such booths are disallowed as they are platforms to woo voters,” he said, adding that EC should also spell out clearly the rules and regulations during voting.

Hishamuddin said polling day is a period where everybody should help the registered voters to execute their democratic rights as citizens.

“Umno is also bothered by allegations of possible fraud in the electoral list as some 3,000 voters are not accounted for.

“The ministry can direct the National Registration Department (NRD) to probe the matter but ultimately, it is up to the EC to decide on such allegations,” he said.
