Not many flying the Jalur Gemilang

What say you on the issue below?

HAVE Malaysians lost the spirit of Merdeka?

I say this because not many Malaysians, especially in Ipoh, take the trouble to display the Jalur Gemilang in all its splendour and glory.

We have just been independent slightly over half a century and we are already losing the spirit of patriotism to our nation, while in the United States, which has been independent for some 400 years, the spirit and the vigour with which Independence Day is celebrated is beyond imagination.

When you travel their back country you will definitely come across the Stars and Stripes flying proudly over a ramshackle barn.

In Ipoh, we are proud of our Bazaar Ramadan.

There could be more than 10 such bazaars but I choose to comment on the one that is nearest to my house at Medan Gopeng. Not a single stall flies the Jalur Gemilang.

How much does it cost to buy a Jalur Gemilang and a handle to hang it from?

When one has all these, how long does it take to hang it up?

The holy month of Ramadan is not an excuse to reduce or dampen our independence spirit.

We must maintain the vigour and self-sacrifice of our forefathers who fought so hard – and lost their lives – to gain the independence we now enjoy.

Two months before Aug 31 each year, the various authorities, NGOs and political parties should start a vigorous campaign to get every Malaysian to fly the Jalur Gemilang.

To those who think they are true Malaysians, fly the Jalur Gemilang at least once a year.

It does not hurt your pay packet at all.
