Lat shows Malaysia is a melting pot

What say you on the issue below?

KUALA LUMPUR: A tattered, dog-eared book is Marzuki Samsuddin's prized copy of Mat Som by national cartoonist Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid, fondly known as Lat.

The once-orange cover has faded to a faint yellow, but Marzuki's daughter proudly produced it to be signed by Lat at the Bangsar Shopping Centre yesterday.

Shuhadah, 22, from Kampung Pandan, made the trip to "Lat's 1Malaysia Exhibition" as she "loves all things Lat".

"Most of the Lat books at home are in poor condition as they have passed through many hands. Many family members, friends and relatives are Lat fans."

She said Lat's works reminded her of her father's stories of his youth.

"I can't help but choke up with tears when I see Lat's drawings."

Retiree Saw Chee Ling said Lat had a way of telling the truth without being offensive or malicious.

"He captured the fact that our nation is a melting pot. Even foreigners appreciate his work."

There are 66 Lat sketches on display at the exhibition organised by the New Straits Times Press (M) Berhad and Bandar Raya Developments Bhd.

The exhibition ends tomorrow.
