Flood evacuees in Langkawi now 1,412

What say you on the issue below?

LANGKAWI: The number of flood evacuees on the island has increased by 999 people, bringing the total to 1,412 from 291 families yesterday.

A spokesman of the Langkawi Welfare Department said there were 1,036 evacuees at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kedawang in Kedawang, while 376 people were being housed at Dewan Al-Sifaq in Padang Mat Sirat.

She said although the rain had eased a little yesterday the floodwaters in the two areas had yet to subside, preventing the villagers from going home.

However, she said, there had been some improvement in the Ulu Mukim area.

She said an evacuation centre set up at Dewan Maktab Mahmud here, which housed 65 evacuees, was closed after the flood situation in the area improved.

In Baling, most of the villagers affected by the floods had returned home after the situation showed improvement.

Checks by the New Sunday Times showed that villagers at Kampung Chenerai here were busy cleaning up their houses yesterday.

Ghulam Dam Shadat, 64, said she was glad the situation at her village had returned to normal.

"It is tiring to clean up all the mess caused by the flood. Some of my furniture is damaged but I am grateful that I can now break fast in my own house with my family."

It was reported that 1,000 people from 23 villages in the Baling district were forced to abandon their homes after their houses were inundated by 1m-deep floodwaters.
