DEXION Wildcats were crowned the Division One champions of the President’s Cup ice hockey league.
Despite losing 6-7 to Tenaga in their last fixture, Dexion Wildcats were assured of the Division One title after collecting 16 points from 12 matches. They had won eight matches and lost four times.
Asian Tigers, who were in the running for the title, settled for the second spot after going down 7-8 to Teachers.
Dexion Wildcats captain Gary Tan said the league was an exciting one and they had to give their best in all the matches.
The President’s Cup ice hockey league is organised by the Malaysian Ice Hockey Federation (MIHF).
The league has three divisions. After the league fixtures, the top four teams in Division One will play to decide the finalists for the finals on Dec 10.
MIHF secretary Susan Loh said the league, which started on Sept 14, was a platform for them to identify players for the coming international competitions.
“A total 12 teams, in three divisions, were involved in the league, The number of players was 140. We are pleased with the increased number of players. More youngsters are taking an interest in ice hockey and we are confident of assembling a strong national squad,’’ said Susan.
Renault Warriors became the champions in Division Two. They had recorded seven wins, two draws and three losses and ended with 16 points. In second place was Vipers with 15 points from seven wins, a draw and four defeats.
The three-team Division Three saw D’Jungle Magic taking the top spot with nine points while Metro Star are second with five points.
The league would culminate with the finals on Saturday from 6.30pm onwards.
Susan said the matches were expected to be interesting and exciting.
