DO NOT be surprised if you see a fire hydrant in the middle of the road in Kampar.
As bizarre as it sounds, these yellow hydrants are actually sticking out of nowhere, much to the annoyance of road users.
The latest of such cases has “sprouted” in Kampung Baru New Wah Loong following a road expansion exercise.
Several villagers told MetroPerak that the contractor had merely left the 0.2m-tall hydrant at its original spot after broadening Jalan 10 over a month ago.
“It is dangerous especially at night. Road users may not be able to see the hydrant and avoid it in time.
“Motorcyclists are in more danger as they could be flung from their machines should an accident take place but thankfully, no such incident has taken place,” said one villager who wanted to remain anonymous.
Kampar Fire and Rescue Department chief Zainuddin Mat Daud said it was nothing new in Kampar.
“It has happened several times before as irresponsible building or road contractors deem it as too much trouble to redo the piping when shifting a hydrant,” he said.
Despite attempts to get away with their shoddy work, hydrants situated in the middle of roads are too glaring a mistake for anyone not to notice.
“People are bound to complain to the department and the recent case in Kg Baru New Wah Loong is no different.
“We have already taken action against the contractor and ordered them to rectify the problem,” said Zainuddin.
He explained that a contractor must submit a copy of their building plans to the department prior to carrying out any development works should a hydrant be located in the area.
This, he said, was to determine if the hydrant needed to be relocated.
“Under Section 26 of the Fire Services Act 1988, it is an offence to create obstacles or hinder us from performing our fire-fighting duties.
