‘The White Bat’ on show

What say you on the issue below?

DANCEWORKS Production is bringing its upcoming charity ballet performance to the Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur next month.

Choreographed by Malaysian choreographer Jie Choong Wan Chin, The White Bat is based on the music of Johann Strauss II’s well-known opera, Die Fledermaus.

The neo-classical ballet is about repressed housewife Bella and her husband, an ambitious architect called Jonathan.

In the dance, the Bat is the hidden nature, moving among the shadows and manifesting at night.

In the name of love: Jonathan and the Bat fighting for Bella’s love in The White Bat.

Desperate for attention, the neglected Bella turns to the Bat who appears at night and follows him to the Nightingale Club where Bella is turned into a gorgeous and alluring woman.

Struggling to regain Bella’s love, Jonathan realises what love is about when he is losing her. Bella too finally rediscovers herself and finds true love.

The full cast of The White Bat consists of 13 foreign performers from the UK, Australia and Japan, and 15 local award-winning performers.

The main roles are performed by Hironao Takahashi from Northern Ballet Theatre in the UK, Ena Hirose from Ena Ballet Studio Company in Japan and Nobuo Fujino who is formerly from the Hong Kong Ballet company.

Formed in 1998, Danceworks Production desires to bring dance to a higher level among both spectators and participants and at the same time assist local charity organisations.

Danceworks Production has staged five major productions and raised more than RM400,000 to benefit more than 13 local charities since 1998.

Part of the proceeds from the performance will be given to deserving local charities such as SPCA, Living Hope Malaysia and Hospis Malaysia.
