Moving with the times

What say you on the issue below?

Good health isn't just about eating right. These days, consumers also appreciate home appliances which incorporate "health-conscious" features. They look out for innovative and high-tech products with green or energy-saving features to keep up with the times.

LG Electronics, a leading innovator in home appliances, recently kicked off its second Health+ Campaign with the slogan, Upgrade Your Life In Every Way.

"LG strongly believes that a healthier lifestyle begins at home, so we are committed to providing the healthiest home environment," says Young-ha Lee, president and CEO of LG Electronics Home Appliance Company (LG HAC).

"Our annual Health+ Campaign, first launched in 2009, is at the heart of our efforts to help customers enjoy healthier lifestyles through our products."

Traditionally, consumers want a refrigerator so that they can store food for a longer period. Now they are looking for more innovative features.

LG Electronic's newest refrigerator comes with sophisticated features such as Green Plasma, door cooling system, Green Ions and Vitamin Plus.

By releasing ions inside the fridge, the Green Plasma kit works in tandem with catechin (a compound in green tea) to eliminate bacteria, remove odours, deodorise the fridge, and slow down spoilage of fresh foods. LG's Green Plasma technology has been certified by the Japan Food Research Laboratory.

The fridge's Vitamin Plus function helps fruits and vegetables retain up to 1.7 times more vitamin C than a conventional fridge.

The fridge's innovative three-way cooling system – on the door, sides and back – can cool food faster and maintain even interior temperature to keep foods fresh. Strawberries are said to stay fresh for up to 2.5 times longer.

In Malaysia, this Green Plasma refrigerator is available in two models: GR-M492CPN (white) priced at RM2,049 and GR-M492CSN (stainless steel) at RM2,049.

This new refrigerator and several other innovative products were introduced to a group of 20 Asian media personnel at a six-day press tour of South Korea hosted by LG Electronics recently. The tour covered four cities – Seoul, Busan, Changwon and Jeju.

In Seoul, the group visited DIOS in Gallery (an LG shop) and were later briefed on LG's Health+ Campaign at LG Twin Towers.

According to latest statistics, LG's multi-door refrigerator is a market leader in the United States.

"The auto drawer of the four-door French door refrigerator is ergonomically designed. With the addition of a smart gadget, consumers no longer have to pull open a heavy drawer by bending down. This is a unique LG technology," says Dan D.H. Koh, vice-president of LG HAC's Marketing Strategy Team.

"Also, our door mounted ice-maker, which usually appears on the lower shelf, has been shifted to the upper shelf for easy access to ice. These subtle changes help make our products a hit."

No.1 front-loaders

LG has proven its technological excellence when its front-loading washing machines became a top seller in the United States for 2008 and 2009.

"Customers in the US look for three things when buying a washing machine: eco-friendliness, fabric care and stylish design, and LG has met their needs with its front-loader washers," says Charlie Kwon, director and Asian RBL (Regional Business Leader). "LG eco-friendly washers consume less energy and water thanks to its direct drive motor and steam technology.

"Before LG introduced front-loading washers, the agitator type washer dominated the market. The agitator placed in the middle of the drum causes slight damage to the texture of clothing despite the shorter washing time," he says.

Home appliances used to be called "white goods" but LG introduced colourful and attractive-looking washers to revolutionise the industry.

Kwon says: "These products were a hit and became an industry trend."

"The plus points of front-loading washing machines are fabric care and the water and energy-saving features," says Kwon.

In Asia, Kwon points out that market research indicates that 5.5kg and 6.5kg washing machines are selling well on average. "But given that washing machines with a large capacity are increasing in market share, manufacturers have started launching products with a capacity exceeding 15kg.

"We plan to launch 12kg models in Asian countries after July to meet consumer demands for larger capacity machines," says Kwon. "The 12kg washing machine is already available in European countries such as Britain, France, Germany and Spain."

Koh says that LG has been leading the front-loading washing machine market since 2006, thanks to its innovative technology such as inverter direct drive motor.

"It also gained commercial acclaim for its large capacity washing machine equipped with a new damping system to reduce noise and vibration, in the European market."

LG's steam technology washing machine is the first washing machine to receive asthma- and allergy-friendly certification from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, and the seal of approval from the British Allergy Foundation.

The washing machines claim to use less energy and water, and can remove wrinkles and odour in a 20-minute steam spray cycle.

LG's dishwasher eases the chore of cleaning dirty dishes.

Steam is able to penetrate clothes more quickly and remove allergens and kill germs.

In Malaysia, LG's Front Loader (with steam function) is available in two models: WD-CD1014S (RM4,899) and WD-SR1212AC (RM7,499).

LG's top loading washing machine comes with a steel tub and built-in tub-cleaning function.

The new top-loader cleans the inner and outer tub with the push of a button. The tub-cleaning function helps prevent the growth of mildew, a skin irritant.
