Coiffure couture

What say you on the issue below?

Generally, Malaysians tend to be more conservative when it comes to fashion. Well, perhaps we could do something exciting, starting with the hair.

Schwarzkopf Professional South East Asia general manager Peter Theodoulou believes that hair colour is a "good, direct indicator of fashion" and thus, playing around with your hair colour would be a good place to start.

"I'd like to see Malaysians to be more courageous and trendy. Push the barriers to be trendy and younger.

"Try more colours. I would like to see that more on Malaysians," says Theodoulou in an interview recently.

Or try one of their five latest seasonal cuts – Cyber Sport, Boudoir, Uniform, New Rebel or Punk Goddess – from their Essential Looks Pure Collection for Spring/Summer this year.

Essential Looks is the seasonal tool for change, Theodoulou states, and it has continued to deliver wearable, desirable style.

"We transpose those styles that we see on the catwalk into commercial wearable styles and put together five this season, very different specific trends," he elaborates.

"A consumer that goes into a Schwarzkopf hair dressing salon will know that they will be up-to-date and in trend for the next coming season," says Theodoulou, who has been in the hair dressing and beauty industry for 25 years.

So how wearable are the five cuts?

Theodoulou reckons they are all very wearable.

"It all depends on your needs, your age, where you work and your own ethics. But out of five styles, you can find one that will suit you as an individual.

"We educate our stylist on how to cut these styles and it is up to them to discern for their clients what best suits them," he clarifies.

He believes there that is something for everybody and describes the hair styles to be "very strong, distinctive cuts that will be very prevalent throughout this Spring/Summer."

Cyber Sport

Modern sportswear fabrics like neoprone, nylon and mesh allow for easy movement.

In hair, "we are following through with this very beautiful and very distinctive precision cut with amazing colour work through that," says Theodoulou.

The cuts are designed to express motion, with undercuts, strong shapes, and styling flexibility. Black forms the colour basis, offset with reds, oranges and blues. Strong colours are used to create shine and evoke artificial sportswear fabrics.

Boudoir

Flirty, vivacious and utterly feminine, this look evokes romance as rufles and floaty sheers are paired with pretty underwear and Fifties-style dresses.

To evoke that dreamy sensation, hair is full of sexy volume and texture. Femininity and romance is maintained with soft shapes, while deep tones of wine-red, copper and rich brown keep the feeling plush, nocturnal and candlelit.

This cut, according to Theodoulou, is a "sexy beautiful style."

Uniform

Cool and clean with a luxury finish, military garments are being given a sexy edge. Battle worn jackets, t-shirts and skirts are embellished, deconstructed and slashed to the thigh, while strong lines are reinforced with a palette of khaki, dust and dirt.

Hair is similarly authoritarian, with unisex styles that bear straight lines and strong shapes.

Boyish cuts on men and women feature internal layering, short contours and soft undercuts.

Uniform-inspired colour sees matt greens, blues and greys set within a black base.

New Rebel

The New Rebel hair is intentionally unkempt, with moshpit-friendly styles that are designed to be easy

Anti-establishment denims are slashed and stained, and teamed with mismatched layering such as loose t-shirts hacked off at the midriff. Hair is intentionally unkempt, with moshpit-friendly styles that are designed to be easy.

An abundance of texture and soft shapes add a rock edge, in combination with a suitably cool colour palette of sable blondes and light browns.

Theodoulou reckons this one is for the young and trendy, who wants to be different and rebellious.

Punk Goddess

Beautiful dresses and fabrics are burnt, torn and ravaged, while soft draping takes on a bondage finish.

In hair, styles are long and layered or graduated, with undercuts and untamed curls creating movement and volume, redolent of grown-out Mohicans.

Hair colours are kept strong, with a glossy finish adding the requisite luxury touch.

"This is (for) a very dominant woman who wants to be a little bit aggressive," describes Theodoulou.
