Selangor grabs seven medals in three-day cycling championships

SELANGOR had a fruitful outing in the third leg of the National Back-Up cycling circuit at the Kuala Lumpur Velodrome recently.

Selangor won a gold, three silver and three bronze medals in the three-day championships. Selangor’s only gold came from Nor Farah Ain Amran in the women’s Under-15 2km Individual pursuit.

The 15-year Nor Farah, a student of SMK Seksyen 7, Shah Alam, also won two silvers in the sprint and 500m time trial. In both the events, Sabah’s Lauretta Eva Adrian won the gold medals.

Selangor’s third silver was won by Mohd Imran Mohd Zubir in the men’s Under-15 2km Individual pursuit after the youngster finished Mohd Firdaus Suardi.

Selangor’s bronze medallists were Mohd Faiz Izzuddin Omar, Mohd Firdaus Mohd Zonis and Norsyahmira Anis Saidi Ahmad. Mohd Faiz finished third in the men’s 16-18 age group 3km individual pursuit; Mohd Firdaus in the men’s Under-15 sprint while Norsyahmira settled for the bronze in the women’s Under-15 2km individual pursuit.

Selangor coach Yafiz Jamaluddin praised the cyclists for their fine performance in the championships.

Yafiz: The grand finals will be an interesting competition.

“We could have won more medals as some events were cancelled because of bad weather. Nevertheless, we have reasons to be proud as the cyclist gave a good account against the established riders from the other states. They had to contend with trainees from the national junior squad,’’ said Yafiz.

The cyclists, all students, are members of the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) and Selangor Cycling Association (SCA) joint development programme. Yafiz, who has been with the programme since last June, said the cyclists had shown their potential.

“They have a bright chance of being included in the national back up squad. Of course the cyclist have to be consistent,’’ said Yafiz, a former international.

The cyclists in the programme have resumed training. They will be taking part in the grand finals of the SportExcel at the KL Velodrome later this month.

“The grand finals will also be an interesting competition. And I am keen to see a much better performance from the cyclists,’’ said Yafiz.
