THE junior fencers from the Touche Fencing Club registered a clean sweep at the second leg of the Sri Garden Kuala Lumpur fencing meet in Taman Maluri, Cheras, recently .
They stamped their mark featuring in all finals of the four categories — mixed Under-10, boys’ Under-12, boys’ Under-16 and girls’ Under-14 — with their charges in action for the one-two finish.
In the competition held in conjunction with the education provider’s open day, the club’s chief coach, C.W. Mok, said they were confident of their trainees dominating the one-day meet as part of the preparation for their recent outing at the YMCA foil tournament in Singapore at the end of the month.
“We fielded our Under-12 girls to compete against their seniors in the girls’ Under-14 contest. Besides the gaining experience to cross swords in a higher age-group, edging the older opponents also boosted their morale,” he added.
Tyanne Fong of Sri Cempaka upstaged school mate Daevina Summugam 15-8 for the victory in the girls’ category.
However, young talent M. Vinnoth was eliminated in the semi-finals when the 12-year-old went down to the boys’ Under-12 eventual winner Bryan Mok.
Despite trailing by 5-7 in the bout, the 11-year-old Bryan only allowed Vinnoth to score another two more points before advancing with a 10-7 win for a spot in the final.
Mok admitted that Vinnoth is trying to regain his form after a brief layoff when he was gearing up for his UPSR examination.
“He did not turn up regularly during the exam period. But, he showed in his promise in both the inter-team and inter-school tournaments this year. Currently, we are working on his posture and strokes. He will bounce back strongly with his steady improvement,” he added.
Having faced each other on many occasions in training, the duo of Calvin Ong and Andrew Mok failed to produce an intense encounter in the boys’ Under-16 final.
Ong defeated Andrew 15-11 to emerge as the champion.
“They knew each other very well and they did not perform up to their true potential,” said Mok.
In addition, favourite Tristan Cheng Xin Han from Garden International School (GIS) continued to live up to his billing with a convincing 10-2 win over Lim Jin Quan of Sri Cempaka in the mixed Under-10 final.
Meanwhile, the club’s trainees comprising university and college students will compete in a two-day at Garden International School in Mont Kiara on Dec 5 and 6.
The club will also be fielding their fencers in the Under-22 Combat Games scheduled in Penang from Dec 16 to 19.
