THE delicate flavour reminiscent of Scotland’s chilly oceans wafted through the air as Old Pulteney single malt whisky took centre stage at a dinner recently at Las Carretas Restaurant and Bar in Subang Jaya.
The diners had the chance to savour the golden potion produced by one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, the Pulteney Distillery, founded in Wick in 1826 by James Henderson during the town’s “herring boom”.
The 12, 17 and 21-year-old single malts were presented by AsiaEuro Wines and Spirits Sdn Bhd, which invited the whisky’s senior brand manager Iain Baxter from Scotland to share the finer points of this drink with guests.
“Old Pulteney is a very complex whisky. It hails from a great place and its distillery is the most northerly on the British mainland,” said Baxter.
He said when the distillery was founded, the town was only accessible by sea; barley was shipped into Wick and the whisky shipped out.
“The key to the brand’s success has been the focus on remaining true to its historical roots in the Wick community and the herring fishing industry, positioning itself as The Genuine Maritime Malt.
“The Genuine Maritime Malt positioning is enhanced by the whisky’s distinctly coastal flavour, which carries a gentle salty hint of the sea,” he added.
The three Old Pulteney variants were at the dinner table, the older the whisky, the stronger the flavour of its accompanying dish.
The 12 Years Old that lured with notes of vanilla, caramel, butter scotch and coconut was paired with entree consisting of baked Mahi Mahi topped with a reduction of 12-year-old Old Pulteney hollandaise, bruschetta of tomato and shaved Swiss Gruyere cheese and pan-seared Halloumi.
Cream of mushroom was served alongside 17 Years Old which tempted with a smoky fruit and oak fragrance, and a higher alcohol content, of course.
The 21 Years Old enticed with hints of honey and spicy overtones and was served to complement Home-Smoked Beef Short Ribs. It was also touted to be an excellent after dinner drink.
All three products have bagged a good number of awards and won accolades the world over with their fine flavours.
