KUALA LUMPUR: POS Malaysia Bhd is holding the world’s biggest philatelic event, the Malaysia 2014 World Youth Stamp Exhibition (KLwyse), from Dec 1 to 6 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
The 29th Asean Stamp Exhibition will form a part of the KLwyse.
The first-of-its-kind event in Malaysia will welcome thousands of stamp collectors and visitors from all corners of the world.
Previously, Malaysia hosted the World National Stamp event in 1997 and the FIAP Asean International Stamp Exhibition in 2004.
More than 300 exhibitors from around the globe are expected to come together to exhibit and showcase their stamps.
There will be some 700 frames of stamps, both competitive and non-competitive, from over 30 countries. More than 30 booths will also be set up by stamp dealers and postal administrations.
KLwyse aims to rekindle the interest of philatelists to participate in international events, to demonstrate and educate the public, particularly the younger generation, about the historical, cultural and educational values of philately, and encourage philately as an exciting hobby.
The event is also to celebrate 160 years of postage stamps in Malaysia, and foster and expand congenial relations and cooperation between members of the international philately community and the postal administrators.
“Come and see what stamps are really about. They don’t just pay for your postals, each stamp tells its own story of our history and heritage,” said MCMC chief industry regulations officer Toh Swee Hoe at a media briefing recently.
Participating countries include Malaysia, Bangladesh, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Namibia, Burundi, South Africa, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Solomon Islands, Togo, Uganda, Niger, Sao Tome and Principe, Maldives, India, United States, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, Kuwait, Oman, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Cuba, Spain, United Kingdom and the Philippines.
Philately Society Malaysia president Datuk Anuar Bashah Sohore said: “These international participants had to first win at stamp competitions in their respective countries to qualify for world exhibitions.
“The juries are also qualified and recognised in the philatelic arena, therefore we will be seeing the best among the best here.”
Highlights include a Court of Honour booth, which will feature a selection of gold medal winners of World Stamps shows collection, and archival stamps from Pos Malaysia.
The main attractions, however, are the quirky and flawed stamps that contain typos or wrong colours.
There will also be Kedah stamps from the time when the state was under the Siam postal system.
Pos Malaysia will have a stamp booth at the exhibition at which all current stamps will be made available. To commemorate the event, Pos Malaysia will launch six special sets of miniature sheets as daily event highlights.
The six miniature sheet themes are Heritage Building, 160 Years of Postage Stamp Usage in Malaysia, Flora, Fauna, Cultural Dance and Malay Folk Stories. For each theme, 30,000 pieces of miniature sheets will be produced. Each sheet is priced at RM5 each. They can be purchased at KLCC, the Pos Malaysia gallery counter at the headquarters in Dayabumi, and post offices nationwide. They can also be purchased online at the Pos Malaysia website.
Also present was Pos Malaysia group chief executive officer Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood.
“The exhibition is a great way to showcase Malaysia while serving as a gathering point for old and new stamp enthusiasts.
“We can also display Pos Malaysia’s other products and services that many are still unaware of,” he said.
