IPOH: MISCONCEPTION is one of the reasons non-Malays shy away from joining the Territorial Army regiment reserve.
Perak’s Territorial Army regiment reserve club is working hard to correct the perception and has embarked on a campaign to recruit non-Malays.
Its chairman, Major (H) David Choi Kok Wai said the club had attracted 200 non-Malays to join the army reserves since 2012.
“Our plan is to get another 400 to join us in the next two years.
“We will be organising roadshows at primary and secondary schools next year to encourage more non-Malays to enlist in the army reserve.”
Choi said this during a community service programme at SJK Bercham, Choi, here, recently,
The event was launched by Perak’s Air Force Training Institute Commandant Colonel Ahmad Abd Rahman.
Besides discipline, Choi said joining the army reserve would promote integration among recruits.
Meanwhile, Choi said 670 people from the air force, army, territorial army and locals set off to clean a 5km radius of Kampung Bercham.
“The cleaning exercise was part of government’s effort to keep dengue at bay.”
It was reported that Perak recorded a 178 per cent increase in dengue cases from January to mid-November this year compared with the same period last year.
Between Jan 1 and Nov 15, the state recorded 5,049 dengue cases compared with 1,816 cases in the same period last year.
The state also recorded 14 dengue-related deaths compared with two cases last year.
In the Kinta Valley, there were 2,831 dengue cases and seven deaths this year compared with 614 dengue cases last year with no fatality.
