Jay Chou electrifies

Visual gimmicks and hit songs fill the Taiwanese singer’s recent concert in Kuala Lumpur, writes Loong Wai Ting
TAIWANESE singer and songwriter Jay Chou is still on full throttle at 35. Rumoured to be tying the knot soon with 21-year-old girlfriend Hannah Quinlivan, Jay was bursting with energy during his recent two-night concert at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.
“It’s great to be back because it almost feels like I’m on vacation,” he said on the first night of his sold-out Opus 2 Jay concert. Jay, who is also an actor and director, performed a selection of memorable songs during the 3½ hour show.
He announced that another album is underway — his last, Opus 12, was released two years ago.
“I am putting the final touches to the album and it should be ready by next month.” Fans responded with screams of delight.
HIGH ENERGY
The show began with a short video clip that had him thanking the crew for the concert. The white curtain then parted to reveal the dashing singer who, sang the first line from Jing Tan Hao while suspended on a gigantic structure.
The energy level in the arena was palpable. Everyone either waved their glowsticks to the tune or sang along with it. The song Long Quan followed.
There were plenty of visual gimmicks. The megastar made sure that his concert was not only a visual treat but also an electrifying experience.
One 3D video presentation saw Jay “battling” his way out of a make-believe crystal castle, complete with a hologram of himself and his dancers executing sword fights. If that was not enough to get everyone in a delirious mood, a water sprinkler was triggered and “rain” started falling on those seated at the front.
Another unforgettable experience was when a huge cardboard cutout was brought down from the hanger above the stage. It replicated the school in Secret, the 2007 film that marked Jay’s directorial debut. He also wrote, produced and starred in it. During this segment, Jay performed Bu Neng Shuo De Mi Mi, the award-winning soundtrack from the film.
HOLLYWOOD DEBUT
He then performed Nunchucks from The Green Hornet which marked his Hollywood debut. Jay and his dancers performed a martial arts-inspired dance routine before launching the green nunchucks into the air.
A short sketch from another directorial effort, The Rooftop, was next, followed by Jay’s performance of All The Way North taken from the action film Initial D. When he performed Ke Ai Nu Ren, the camera slowly focused on several female fans. Some were caught off guard seeing images of themselves on two large screens on both sides of the stage while others reacted gleefully and started taking their pictures
Gong Gong Pian Tou Tong had the crowd on its feet, dancing to the catchy and energetic number.
Jay’s back-up vocalists then took centre stage to perform an a capella medley of some of his greatest hits, including Da Ben Zhong. Accompanied by a beat-boxer, they created a different feel to most of the songs and showed that a capella version of the songs could be just as good.
Jay also showed off his vocal prowess in Rainbow, Guai Ji, Shing Qing, Hui Dao Guo Qu and Qing Tian.
Other notable tracks included Hei Se Mao Yi, Xi Mian Chu Ge and, for encore, Ukulele, and Yang Guang Zhai Nan.
“I am very happy to see everyone here tonight. I remember being on this stage last year. Perhaps we should do this every year?”asked Jay.
