Charity run raises RM40,000 for cancer patients

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1,000 people took part in the 5km Pink Love Charity Run at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, here, recently.
The event, organised by Shills Beauty Sdn Bhd and Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA), was held to raise awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds for BCWA.
The runners had gathered early at the park to witness Shills Beauty executive director Lee Joyce presenting a mock cheque of RM40,000 to BCWA president Assoc Prof Dr Zaharah Aiyub.
People of all ages took part in the run which was divided into two categories — individual and buddy run.
The buddy run was interesting as each team of two people or “buddies” had to tie a long pink ribbon around their legs.
They had to run in sync with one another to symbolise that breast cancer patients and survivors are not alone in the fight as the entire community are with them.
Dr Zaharah said: “BCWA collaborates with non-governmental organisations, the private sector and government bodies to organise awareness campaigns and charity runs every year.
“We are happy to see families and friends coming together for a good cause. Today, we also taught women how to check for lumps in their breasts. We brought our mobile clinical breast examination vehicle so they could learn self-breast examination techniques from our nurses and undergo tests.
“Not all lumps in breasts are cancerous. Sometimes, the lumps might just be fibroids. However, if anyone detects lumps in their breasts, they should consult a specialist immediately.
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer back in August, 2007. I was doing a self-breast examination in my home in Subang Bestari when I noticed lumps in my breasts. I underwent a surgery in October the same year.”
Santhiya Manogaran, 28, said she came with a friend to take part in the run.
“We are happy to participate in the run.”
Azlina Mahat, 35, a Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation officer said: “I am happy to run for a good cause today. I live in Precinct 15, Putrajaya, and came here at 6.30am to make sure I was on time for the event.”
Lee said: “We are delighted with the overwhelming response.
“We targeted 1,000 people to join the run and opened the registration from July till October.
“The response was so great that we managed to get 1,000 runners by Sept 15 and closed the registration before October.
“Over 200 unregistered people also showed up to support the event. Apart from the RM40,000 presented to BCWA today, 10 lucky runners will also receive prizes through a lucky draw,” she said.
Participants who completed the run received medals and certificates.
