THE Christmas spirit was definitely in the air at the Penang state-level Christmas Open House 2011.
Many of those who came for the event joined participating church choirs in singing heartwarming Christmas carols such as Silent Night, Holy Night.
There were also cultural dances and sketches during the open house which lasted for more than three hours on Sunday at the Shop in dPark in Highway AutoCity Juru.
The event, themed ‘Love, Peace and Joy To All’, was participated by various Christian organisations and churches.
A 20-member cycling group from the St Anne Church in Bukit Mertajam who dressed in Christmas-themed outfits was the highlight. The group cycled more than 7km to the venue in a bid to share the Christmas message of Love, Peace and Joy.
Calling themselves the Iron Horse Evangelisation Team, they distributed 3,000 Christmas bookmarks to those who came for the open house.
St Anne parish priest Reverend Father Henry Rajoo said the group had travelled more than 42km in the last one week to Permatang Tinggi, Sungai Lembu and Machang Bubuk to distribute the bookmarks.
A group of 16 Sabahans working in Penang represented the FGA centre to perform a Murut dance.
The Lion of Judah performers from the Peniel Christian Fellowship in Seberang Jaya stole the show with a drums performance.
Other performances included a sketch and song by the Sungai Ara Baptist Church members and a mime sketch by the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Butterworth.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was accompanied by his wife Betty Chew, opened the event.
Also present were Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) Penang chairman Bishop Andrew Phang and Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) Penang chairman Bishop Anthony Selvanayagam.
The event was jointly organised by the Christian Federation of Malaysia which comprises the Roman Catholic Church, CCM and National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) churches.
In his speech, Lim said the state decided to hold the event on the mainland this year as it was held on the island the last three years.
The crowd was treated to traditional and western food.
