Xmas gift vrooms in

What say you on the issue below?

IT WAS all smiles and laughter for the residents of the Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Klang Selangor in Port Klang after they received an early Christmas present from the S P Setia Foundation recently.

The special children and youths grinned upon seeing the new 12-seater Kia Pregio van worth almost RM76,000, entering the porch of their home, knowing that they will have a new ride to school.

The 35 residents, who have been travelling in a seven-year-old van that was not in the best condition, can now look forward to commuting between home, school and around town more comfortably.

Good deed: Lee (fourth from right) handing over the mock key to Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Klang Selangor patron Tan Sri Dr Lau Ban Tin.

During the event of the van presentation, the children also took the opportunity to perform an aerobic dance to the beat of Taio Cruz’s hit song Higher for the guests.

S P Setia Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said when his foundation was approached to contribute to the Home, they did not hesitate as they had always tried to provide assistance to the disabled.

“It is not easy to take care of those in need and the group of caring individuals behind this welfare home deserve much praise and admiration for giving so much of their time and energy to making sure that the children are well taken care of,” said Lee.

He said that the S P Foundation, which was established on Jan 17, 2000 under the auspices of S P Setia Berhad, also focused on the promotion of education through the Setia Adoption Programme, which is now sponsoring 2,300 students from 119 schools in Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Pahang.

These students are provided with educational assistance worth about RM800 and RM900 annually for the duration of their primary and secondary education.

“Every year more than RM2mil is allocated for the programme,” said Lee, adding that it has been extended to Murud, Sabah to assist students from poverty-stricken families.

The Persatuan Kanak-kanak Cacat Klang Selangor was established in 1994, with a group of handicapped, abandoned and orphaned special children of various age with various disabilities.

It was all thanks to the effort of founder N. Morgun who had used RM20,000 from his personal savings to give a home to these unfortunate children.

The home, which currently shelters 79 special residents, has a monthly budget of RM30,000 to be spent on the necessities needed by its residents who depend on the support from the public.
