WINNING house design with the concept of “a tree in the hot tropics” has done Malaysia proud at the Asia Pacific Design Centre’s 2011 Awards recently.
The residential unit — S11 House by architect Dr Tan Loke Mun, beat more than 500 international projects worldwide to win two awards — the Sustainable Design Award and Residential Unit Award at the event held in Wuxi, China.
Countries that participated in the competition were Singapore, Indonesia, Dubai, Italy, France, Netherlands, Denmark, Canada, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Tan said S11 House, which comprised a wide range of green elements in its design and construction, has a large insulated canopy roof that provided wide shelter for the living space beneath,
The 12,000 sq ft built-up house, located in Section 11, Petaling Jaya, is also Malaysia’s first Green Building Index platinum rated residential house that is owned and designed by Tan.
Tan said he was happy that a small project from Malaysia could clinch an international award.
He added that the win also reinforced the acknowledgement of Malaysia’s respectable standing in the world’s green and sustainability design community.
He said the international jury panel comprised well-known design luminaries like Claude Berube (Canada), Michael Schwarz (Germany), Niel Peter Flint (Denmark) and Patrick Fong (Hong Kong).
