JOHOR BARU: Bike enthusiasts had a rare chance of looking at antique bikes, some of which were used by the army 71 years ago.
The antiques were part of some 100 of elaborately decorated and decked out motorbikes on display at an exhibition at Plaza Pelangi here recently.
Engineer Wong Loy Chon, 57, said the exhibition was an eye opener as he found the antique Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) M20 bike fascinating.
“It was interesting to listen to bike enthusiasts tell stories behind the motorbikes.
“I was also surprised to learn that the old bikes are still in such good condition,” he said.
Enthusiast S. Visvanathan brought along 17 bikes to display at the event.
“I am proud to showcase my bikes and it is a way to attract youngsters to know more about bikes.
“Among the models lined up were the Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) M20, Norton motorcycle, Matchless, Triumph and Morris,” said the 61-year-old businessman.
Visvanathan, who is also the Johor Vintage Car and Classic Bike Enthusiast Club president, said he was happy to be able to explain about the bikes to new learners.
“They do not know much about classic bikes that we used during the war and I find joy in answering their questions,” he said.
He added that the bikes were hard to maintain compared to the latest model.
“Besides that, the spare parts for the bikes are still available but it is only being manufactured in England,” he said.
Organiser Johor Biker Assoc-iation president Abd Rahim Ahmad said the event was held in conjunction with the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar’s birthday and motorbikes were used for the Kembara Mahkota Johor.
