R.AGE Food Fight: The search for Malaysia’s next food celebrity

If you’ve always watched Gordon, Jamie, Giada et al on TV and thought, “hey, that doesn’t look very hard”, the R.AGE Food Fight is just the competition for you.
Food Fight is a search for Malaysia’s next young food celebrity – someone who not only has a passion for food, but who can also inspire others with that passion. Doesn’t matter if you’re a home baker, food blogger, culinary arts student, barista or a straight-up foodie with a big personality – everyone’s welcome to be a Food Fighter.
The winner will get RM10,000 cash to help kickstart his/her professional foodie career, but that’s not even the best part.
He/she will also get a food column in The Star, an online video series on R.AGE, masterclasses by Le Cordon Bleu Malaysia and more!
Leading the search is Malaysia’s original food celebrity, Chef Wan, and a host of other experts – Le Cordon Bleu master chef Rodolphe Onno from France, Restaurant DC owner Darren Chin, noted food blogger KY Speaks and performing artiste/up-and-coming restaurateur Tan Chung Liang.
“This is such a wonderful project. I have a lifetime of experience, having worked my way up from the bottom over the past 27 years, and I want to share as much as I can with the finalists,” said Chef Wan.

To participate, you have to do two things:
> Record a video of yourself presenting a dish or beverage which incorporates our featured ingredient – palm oil (doesn’t get more Malaysian than palm oil!) – and mention at least one of its benefits on camera.
> Write a blogpost to complement your video. The blogpost could be on additional tips, a breakdown of the recipe, or simply the inspiration behind your video. It’s all up to you!
Five finalists will be selected from the video submissions, and they will go through the masterclasses with Chef Wan and co. ahead of the grand finale – a live cook-off to determine who will be the first ever R.AGE Food Fight champion.
Chef Wan will mentor the finalists ahead of the grand finale.
Chef Wan, who will be one of the grand finale judges, is looking for someone with “an X-factor”.
“As a celebrity chef, you have to be an entertainer, host, lecturer and even comedian all in one,” he said.
Onno, from Brittany, France, has been in Malaysia for just over a year, and he has already been impressed by the young food entrepreneurs and bloggers in the country, especially how a lot of them juggle their culinary pursuits with other jobs.
“I hope (those who take part in Food Fight) are motivated, that they really love what they do. More than that, I hope they can endure difficulties. I think one quality important for any career is perseverance. Never stop, never say ‘I cannot’,” said Onno.
He also had some positive things to say about the competition’s featured ingredient, especially its health benefits. “(Palm oil) is good for blood pressure, it helps prevent thrombosis, and it’s rich in carotenoids, which act as an antioxidant.”
