KUALA LUMPUR: The people should support the work of local artists as they can help with racial unity as well as economic growth in the tourism and culture sector, says Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim.
The socio-cultural adviser to the Government said the works of local artists highlighted ideas, emotions and stories that contain elements close to the daily lives of people, which could educate them on many aspects.
"The work of Negri Sembilan artist Cheah Thien Soong, which uses the ink painting technique, is inspired by the environment, Eastern and Western cultures. His artwork has high value," he said after the launch of "Cheah Thien Soong: Nanyang Ink Painting" exhibition at the National Visual Arts Gallery here.
Rais said that art and culture were the people's and those who promoted values like heritage and peace through their art should be nurtured.
He said this could be done by supporting the efforts of local talents so that they can continue to create high-quality work.
"The paintings in today's exhibition is the work of a Chinese painter, but the message conveyed can be appreciated by all races and society, including the international community. It can clearly bring us together," he said.
Rais said that everyone, especially those from the private sector, should support the local art scene by buying their paintings.
