Tire prices rose from January 1

What say you on the issue below?


Caused by the increasing price of rubber grade and the fall of the ringgit, the price of new and retreaded tires will be increased from five to 10 percent starting January 1, 2017.

Chairman of the Association of Traders Tires Johor, Goh Soo Chay told Nanyang Siang Pau, a local tire dealer informed of this tire price increases by some parties such as importers, wholesalers and local tire makers.

"Tyres imports unless China will be increased from five to 10 per cent, while imported tires from China are expected to rise by 10 per cent.

"While automakers retreading has also told all local tire dealer that the new price of retreaded tires will be increased from five to 10 percent starting January 1, 2017," said Soo Chay.

According to him, a maker of tires from China has previously explained that they had to raise prices because the price of tires tire-grade SMR 20 rose by six per cent and added further depreciation of the ringgit by eight percent.

"Overall, the increase should be 14 percent, but the importers and wholesalers have agreed to fix the rate of increase of 10 percent," he explained.

Soo said Chay, tire-grade SMR 20 was priced at RM6 per kg is not so long ago has risen to RM9.26 a kg in mid-December. Currently, the price remains RM8.80 per kg.

In addition to Chinese-made tires, tire brand made in foreign countries that are sold in our country, including Bridgestone, Michelin, Falken, Yokohama and others; while locally made tires were Goodyear, Toyo, Silverstone, Contiental and so on.

He advised the public to change their tires before the Chinese New Year because the seller usually has a stock of old tires between one to two months, which allows customers to buy according to the old prices.

"The rise in prices is inevitable. But traders also like ordinary people who face pressure, the higher cost of living.

"But we always maintain the feeling of understanding and tolerance by not burdening users fully. If not, many users will complain of dissatisfaction, "he said.
