KUALA LUMPUR - The provision of natural gas rebate rate of RM0.40 sen per MMBtu (million British Thermal Unit), as announced by the government recently, is likely to push up gas prices by 22.6 per cent by the end of 2019.

While expressing concern, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) said in a statement today said the development was likely to occur when the country is facing the global economic uncertainty.

He was commenting on the Energy Commission's announcement on December 28 to approve tariffs on the basis of RM26.71 per MMBtu for the first half of 2017, followed by RM28.05 MMBtu in the second half and next RM30.90 and RM31.92 respectively MMBtu for the first half and the second in 2018.

In 2019, the average base tariff approved was RM32.69 MMBtu for the first six months and RM32.74 for the next six months.

Elaborating, FMM said it was aware that the mechanism GCPT (Cost of Gas Discharge) used and the basic tariff rates will be adjusted according to the announcement GCPT for the period.

"FMM will continue to voice (interest) natural gas pricing was fair, especially for the gas from the source of the local channel and get further involvement by the government to clarify some basic average base tariff set for the next three years," he said.
