MARANG: The body of a 12-year-old pupil, who was feared drowned after he slipped and fell into Sungai Buaya here on Wednesday evening, has been found.
The body of Megat Nazmi Asraf Megat Mohd Nezen, a Year Six pupil of Sekolah Kebangsaan Gelugor, was found at 8.21am Thursday, 200m from where he went missing.
According to Wakaf Tapai Fire and Rescue Station chief Assistant Commissioner Suriati Ariffin, the incident took place at about 6.50pm on Wednesday.
"Two witnesses who were swimming there saw the boy coming to the river bank located behind Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Payong.
"The duo in their 20s knew the victim and asked him if he wanted to swim. The victim also indicated that he did not know how to swim," she said.
The duo then saw the boy slipped and fell into the river.
"They tried to rescue him using a long stick but their attempts were futile as the water was flowing fast due to the rain," she said.
The victim's body was sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu for a post-mortem before being handed over to his family for burial at the Kampung Rawai Muslim cemetery in Bukit Payong here.
