Unique sound

What say you on the issue below?

CATCH Japanese duo Hanamas for a unique music experience at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP), KLCC, on Dec 12.

Combining the talents of tsugaru-shamisen player Chie Hanawa and violinist Natsumi Okimasu, Hanamas was awarded the prize for encouragement at the first Neo Classical International Competition last year.

Hanawa is the youngest winner of Japan’s Tsugaru-shamisen National Competition in 2000. After graduating from the Department of Traditional Japanese Music at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2005, she released her debut album, Moon Rabbit.

Okimasu is a graduate of the Department of Instrumental Music. She founded the instrumental group ‘Para-e-sola’, has released an album and performed at concerts around Tokyo. In 2007, she became a member of a classical group called Dualis and performed on a world cruise.

Since forming Hanamas in 2009, the two have performed at live concerts, television and radio programmes in Japan as well as in New York’s Carnegie Hall, the International Advertising Festival (Cannes Lions) and at Malaysia’s music festivals.

The performance at DFP (www.dfp.com.my) is a joint collaboration with the Japan Foundation of Kuala Lumpur. Hanamas will be accompanied by percussionist Shigehito Kawamura and guitarist Taiichiro Shirahama.

They will perform folk songs such as Tsugaru Jongara Boshi, Yagi Bushi, Haru no Uni and original pieces including Life and Kanon, as well as Mozart Tokotoko Koshinkyuko.

There will also be a lecture-demonstration session by the duo on Dec 13 at DPF at 2pm.
