CONTESTANT from Singapore charmed the judges with her grace and smile to win the Miss Sunway Charm, a subsidiary title in the Miss Tourism International 2011.
Standing at 171cm tall, 19-year-old student Amanda Leong Li Ting defeated 53 other contestants at the event held in the concourse area of Sunway Pyramid on Saturday.
The contestants were dressed in casual and evening wear to charm the judges and hundreds of shoppers at the mall.
The panel of judges included Sunway Pyramid marketing director Phang Sau Lian, Fleurs@Marakesh director Eric Wong and one of Malaysia‘s top models Anita Aziz.
Wong said due to his nature of business dealing with flowers, his judging criteria was based on the appeal exuded by the contestant just like how flowers attracted a person at first glance.
“I am looking for the contestant whose walk and smile instantly attract me when she comes on stage,” he said.
This year, the women did more than just catwalk but also brought in the festive flavour by singing three Christmas songs in their bid to collect funds for the flood victims in Thailand.
In a special collaboration between the mall and Malaysia Red Crescent Society, mini-photo frames in the form of jigsaw puzzles were sold for between RM15 and RM50.
Sunway Pyramid chief executive officer H.C. Chan said tourism had always been a key sector for Sunway Pyramid, being part of the iconic tourist development known as Sunway Integrated Resort City, drawing about three million visitors every month.
“The festivals such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali celebrated recently and now Christmas is round the corner,” he said.
Later in the evening, the contestants competed again, this time for the Miss Spec Personality which went to Miss Philippines,Diana Sunshine Rademann.
The 20-year-old student wowed the judges with the way she carried herself confidently on stage.
The panel of judges for this subsidiary title were Spec representative Andrew Cham, Miss Malaysia Chinese World 2011 Kim Low and Stella-In International managing director Leslie Hong.
Cham said given the limited time of knowing the personality of each contestant, his judging was based on the capability of the contestants to show their personality just by their looks and demeanour in those few minutes on stage.
“The winner will definitely be one with the most stage presence,” he said.
Initiated in 1994 by D’Touch International, the Miss Tourism International title is now franchised to more than 80 countries and has seen more than 500 Miss Tourism contestants from around the world participating in the event.
The grand finals will be held at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa, Bandar Sunway on Dec 31.
