THE almost 20-year hiatus for Pesta Laut Lumut has now ended and the popular event is being revived by the state government as an annual event starting this weekend.
State Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Hamidah Osman said the state government has renamed the event, which is being held this weekend, as Pesta Laut Pangkor.
“The event is basically about sand, sea and water and we have arranged various cultural and sporting events at the Lumut Jetty and on Pangkor Island,” she said.
She said the state government hoped to reach the target of 50,000 visitors this year.
“We are trying to make the event synonymous with Pangkor, therefore we will organise the event annually and next year it will be a week-long celebration from Apr 27 to May 3,” she said, adding that Teluk Batik, a popular beach in Lumut, would also be part of the venue for the event next year.
Speaking at a press conference, Hamidah said a one-day course will also be provided for Pangkor taxi drivers to further improve their service levels and tourism knowledge.
“Taxis are an important mode of transportation on the island and the drivers are those who will be the among the first people to meet tourists, therefore we want them to be equipped with knowledge of the island’s history and its attractions, enabling them to become basic tourist guides,” she said.
She said it was not only the taxi drivers but also hotel staff and others in the tourism industry that require more exposure to international tourism and improve their service in anticipation of Visit Perak Year 2012.
She said this when visiting the Rahmat Maritime Museum in Lumut on Tuesday.
