Archrivals clash in final

What say you on the issue below?

A TITANIC final showdown between arch rivals thrilled fans at the closing of the 11th Penang Open Softball championship.

The three-day challenge, which lured teams from Malaysia and Brunei, sparked a hive of fun activities at the Penang Free School field during the ongoing school holi-days.

For the Penang Softball Association, this was enough to make the 11th edition of their challenge a success.

To add to the fun, its top two sides Foxes and Vipers locked horns in a showdown on Sunday to bring the annual tournament to its climax.

It was a tough battle and when the dust cleared, it was the Foxes who managed a narrow 5-4 victory, thus retaining their Penang Open crown.

Incidentally, the painful one-run defeat by Foxes did not prove to be the only disappointment the Vipers were made to experience.

Their women’s side, which were hoping to retain their crown, found Brunei’s Chikara too hot to handle.

This was not surprising as the Brunei outfit was powered by as many as six top Filipino players as well as two equally good Indon-esian players.

Chikare were crowned the new Penang Open Women’s champions in style.

They completed their preliminary round league challenge with maximum points by winning all of their matches.

Then, they handed the title holders a second defeat when the two sides met again in the final.

Showing that their 10-0 whitewash over Vipers in the prelimi-nary round was not a fluke, Chikara went on to register an easy 3-0 victory.

Easily the better of the two sides, Chikara flexed their muscles in the second inning to register three runs through Gedda Va- lencia, Syrel Ramos and Karina Aribal.

That was enough to stop the Vipers in their tracks.
