Apply for licences, illegal traders told

ILLEGAL pasar malam traders in SS2, Petaling Jaya, have until the end of this month to apply for their licences or stern action will be taken against them by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).

MBPJ councillor Terrence Tan said the council was looking into reorganising the stalls as some were trading outside the allocated space, which had in turn caused massive traffic jams near Jalan SS2/60 every Monday evening.

“There are now about 300 legal traders while the remaining 100 are illegal. Some have fake licences, duplicate or no licences,” said Tan.

He added that enforcement officers visited the market weekly and had nabbed illegal foreign traders and confiscated their stalls.

As for the local traders, he urged them to apply for licences to trade as it was not a difficult process.

“We have sent out flyers to encourage those without licences to apply,” said Tan.

The council will also paint each lot on the road clearly to ensure traders operate within the given space.

Tan also highlighted the new side parking system in Jalan SS2/60, Jalan SS2/61, Jalan SS2/62 and Jalan SS2/63 to curb the double-parking habit among motorists.

“With this new side parking, we have created more than 100 extra parking lots around the square,” said Tan.
