KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman yesterday reiterated the government's assurance to resolve power disruptions in the east coast of the state, with the plan to build a thermal power plant in Tawau.
"We are looking into every avenue," he said when asked on the state government's possibility of harnessing thermal energy from the Andrassy Forest Reserve in Tawau.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Peter Pang has been quoted as saying that the plant, expected to generate some 100MW of electricity, was being considered under the Sabah Development Corridor plan.
On Liberal Democratic Party president Datuk Liew Vui Keong's statement that the electricity problem was a political time bomb, Musa said: "I've asked Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd to look into the matter as soon as possible. Among others, we will be getting a new generator set to help overcome the problem."
Liew, who is Sandakan member of parliament, had also said that if the electricity problem in Sandakan was not overcome soon, it would adversely affect Barisan Nasional in the next election.
The state government has been trying to resolve the power woes plaguing the community for years. A proposed coal-fired plant in the east coast of the state was opposed by local leaders and non-governmental organisations on environmental grounds.
