Once decorative, now a danger

What say you on the issue below?

Hanging hazard: Chin showing a long string of light bulbs that has drooped rather low, nearly touching the ground.

THEY were once bright and beautiful, lending a cheery air to the streets and pedestrian walkways.

However, two years down the road, the decorative light bulbs are no longer lighting up the night, and are fast becoming a safety hazard to passing motorists.

Rows of such light bulbs, linked by thin electrical wires that are held in place by a string, can be spotted along Jalan Yaacob Latif in Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, hanging between lamp posts or hugging the branches of trees.

According to Bandar Tun Razak parliamentary constituency community service member Chin Sin Pang, these decorative light bulbs were put up two years ago in conjunction with the National Day celebrations.

“The lights did help to beautify the area back then, but once the celebrations were over, the lights slowly dimmed and burned out soon after.

“They are no longer functioning, so they are useless,” said Chin.

During a visit there, StarMetro noticed the the bulbs were dangling by the wire some were hanging rather low – some only a couple of metres from the ground – thus posing a risk to unsuspecting motorists.

“There are hundreds of such dangling bulbs in the area, so surely they cannot have gone unnoticed by the authorities.

“The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should have removed them long ago.

“We hope the City Hall will act promptly to prevent any mishaps,” Chin said.
