THE junior trainees under the tutelage of former national rhythmic gymnast Sarina Sundararajah are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to display their flair in front of spectators at the Junior Unity Rhythmic Gymnastics Carnival scheduled at the Tropicana City Mall on Oct 25.
Sarina, who has been coaching the beginners for the past six years, said her charges from the training centre in Pusat Bandar Puchong are confident of putting up a good show in the one-day meet organised based on their respectable performances at the recent Selangor Amateur Gymnastic Association (SAGA) Inter-Club competition in June.
Trisha Wong Suet Yee emerged as the best performer in the Grade One contest comprising three events (freehand, rope and hoop) and also went on to claim the top spot in the hoop.
In addition, her team mates Aniyah Aira Ahmad and Dorothea Chen Xiao Jing also settled for second spot in the freehand and hoop respectively.
“The trio will be spearheading the team’s challenge. They are definitely strong contenders in the competition. The trainees in the elite group have been working diligently with double-session training on Saturday and Sunday,” Sarina added .
For the upcoming Under-10 competition decided over three disciplines (freehand, hoop and clubs), the organisers are expecting 12 teams comprising five gymnasts each to be in the fray.
Each team would have to name four Grade One gymnasts and one Grade Two competitor. They must also have representation from at least two different races in their line-up.
They would also be battling for positions in the individual all-round and individual events.
Sarina’s Rhythmic Gymnastics Club and Subang Jaya Club would be fielding two teams each.
And, three other sides - Serdang Rhythmic Angels, Taman Rashna and Dina from Kuala Lumpur - will be sending a team each.
“We have invited clubs affiliated with SAGA to join the occasion. We are also waiting for Total Gymnastique and Yu Hua to confirm their entries,” Sarina said.
Besides the mall stepping forward as the official venue, two other partners for the event are Milo and SportsUnite.
