SEGAMAT: An Ekspres Sina-ran Pagi train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore jumped the tracks near the Batu Anam station here, injuring 17 passengers.

Two of them suffered fractured shoulder bones and were warded at the Segamat Hospital.

The other passengers who sustained minor injuries were given medical attention at the Segamat Hospital and Gemas Clinic.

The train was carrying 243 passengers.

Segamat police chief Superintendent Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said the 11.50am incident at Km572 was believed to have happened when the coupling with the canteen coach broke.

"It happened as the train was switching to another track. All five coaches jumped the tracks when the coupling broke."

Majid said rescuers from police, Fire and Rescue Department as well as Civil Defence Department were rush-ed to the scene.

"We got all the passengers, including those injured, out of the coaches by 1.30pm."

He said an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the incident.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd said the derailment would not affect the operations of the southern sector routes.

"All KTM inter-city trains in the southern sector are operating as usual."

The stranded passengers resumed their journey to their destinations on four buses provided by KTMB.

Work to remove the derailed coaches and repairs on the tracks are expected to be completed today.
