KUALA LUMPUR: Sixteen more deaths from road accidents were recorded, bringing the death toll to 238 since Ops Sikap XX started two weeks ago.

A Bukit Aman police statement said 11 of the victims were motorcyclists while five others were motorists and passengers.

Jalan Ipoh is bursting with traffic again as familiar scenes of crowded roads return with a huge volume of traffic pouring into the Klang Valley yesterday.

Of 1,021 accidents registered on Saturday, 423 occurred on municipal roads, 295 on federal roads, 184 on state roads, 69 on highways and 50 on other roads.

The police issued 9,664 summons to traffic offenders during the operation, said the statement.

The operation, aimed at reducing the number of road accidents during Aidilfitri, ended yesterday.

Meanwhile, National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) director-general Datuk Abdul Bakir Zin said 46 express bus drivers were caught driving under the influence of drugs during the Hari Raya period.

A total of 8,110 bus drivers underwent urine tests conducted jointly by the AADK and Road Transport Department between Sept 16 and Sept 27.

However, Abdul Bakir said no bus accidents were reported this year.

“The urine samples of those tested positive for drugs were sent to the laboratory to be tested again to determine whether they are drug addicts,” adding that their driving licences would be suspended pending the outcome of the test results.

He said random tests were carried out in all the 35 main bus terminals nationwide.
