Bad attitude a hindrance to cleanup

IT’S no an easy task but SWM Environment Sdn Bhd is adamant that all back lanes and alleys behind shop houses, especially in the restaurant areas, in Johor will be clean and the drains unclogged.
Recently, a cleaning crew from SWM Environment unclogged the drains at the back lanes of eateries in Taman Jaya Mas, here, after receiving complaints from customers of foul odour and rodents.
SWM Environment Johor South Regional manager Mohd Zan Arris said the attitude of eatery owners, who discard waste indiscriminately caused clogged drains and rodent infestations.
“Although we are responsible for collecting rubbish in the back lanes, we only collect rubbish that has been thrown into the provided Roll On Roll Off (RORO) bins. What we found in the back alleys were stacks of plastic bags of rubbish which had not been placed in the bins,” he said.
Zan said irresponsible restaurant owners would throw all their kitchen waste into the drains and clogging them.
“Unclogging the drains will cost us as we have to deploy more machinery and manpower,” he said.
For the cleaning-up of Taman Jaya Mas, SWM Environment utilised high-tech machinery such as an ultra whack and water jets to clear clogged drains.
Ten SMW Environment workers were deployed.
“If the rubbish were properly discarded, we would not need the extra manpower or machinery to clean up. The RORO bins system needs only one man to collect the rubbish.”
Zan said because rubbish was thrown indiscriminately, SWM Environment had to double their cleaning time to twice a day and sometimes more for one place.
“We urge the food outlet owners to help us clean and collect rubbish more efficiently. The good habit of throwing rubbish in a proper lidded bin will ensure that the premises are clean and free of rodents. Customers will also be happy,” he said.
