Suspected drug dealer shot dead




JOHOR BARU: Police shot dead a suspected drug dealer after he attempted to stab a police officer with a knife while they were trying to detain him.
Police spotted the 22-year-old man on a motorcycle with his female partner in front of a bank along Jalan Kebudayaan 4 in Taman Universiti around 3.15amyesterday, said Johor Baru North acting OCPD Supt Beh Eng Lai.
A patrolling unit approached them but the suspect ran off into one of the nearby back lanes.
Two police officers gave chase while another detained the 26-year-old woman who was with the suspect.
When police cornered the suspect, he started to pull out a knife and charged towards one of the officers, said Supt Beh.
In self-defence, the other officer fired a shot at the suspect and hit him on the hip.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for a post-mortem.
Supt Beh said that police also seized a nine-inch foldable knife, two drug packets believed to be syabu and Ecstasy, and cash.
He said investigations revealed that the suspect, who was residing in Kangkar Pulai here, had criminal records under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and two more under the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
The woman tested positive for syabu and heroin, he said adding that she also had a criminal record.
One of the police officers suffered minor injuries on his left palm and right elbow while the other suffered pain on his right leg.
