KLUANG: A police traffic officer was killed when she was hit by a mat rempit at a roadblock along Jalan Batu Pahat-Mersing here.
The incident happened at around 2.40am yesterday when Insp Margaret Tagum Goen, 32, was manning the roadblock with 20 other traffic officers and personnel.
Johor police chief Senior Deputy Comm Rusli Ahmad said a group of motorcyclists from Mersing, on their way to town, tried to speed through the roadblock when one of them hit Insp Margaret.
“The impact caused the victim, along with the suspect, to fall,” he said.
“She suffered a broken left hand and internal injuries.”
SDCP Rusli said Insp Margaret, who had been stationed at the Kluang IPD traffic unit for the last five years, was rushed to Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom here, but died at around 12.45pm.
“Police have detained the suspect, who is a school dropout, together with six of his friends who are between the ages of 17 and 20,” SDCP Rusli told reporters at the hospital here.
“We have also seized their motorcycles. Initial checks found that the group had planned to race along the road when they encountered the roadblock. None of them has a valid driving licence.”
He said urine tests on the suspects showed negative for any drug, but the police might classify the case under Section 304 of the Penal Code for manslaughter.
SDCP Rusli also said the victim’s body had been claimed by her husband Leon Bahak, 37, and would be flown back to her village in Bau, Sarawak, for burial.
Leon said they had been married for six years but had no children.
The distraught army personnel stationed at the Mahkota Camp here said Margaret’s death was a great loss to him.
