KUALA LUMPUR: A leg injury has put paid to Woon Khe Wei’s hope of making a strong comeback at the Japan Open.
The world No. 11 women’s doubles shuttlers Khe Wei and Vivian Hoo have been withdrawn from next week’s tournament after the former had complained of pain on her right knee during training.
National women’s doubles coach Wong Pei Tty said that it was best to rest Khe Wei.
“It is pointless to send them if Khe Wei is not fit. She had a slight pain on Monday and we decided to pull them out today,” said Pei Tty after a training session at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara.
Khe Wei was disappointed with the latest setback.
“Vivian and I worked hard during training but it’s unfortunate that I picked up this injury. Hopefully. I will be fine before the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold (Sept 29-Oct 4),” she said.
Khe Wei-Vivian, who lost in the third round of the World Championships in Jakarta in August, are expected to drop a few rungs in the world ranking with the withdrawal.
Malaysia will now take part in the men’s singles (Lee Chong Wei), men’s doubles (Lee Yan Sheng-Lin Woon Fui, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Hoon Thien How-Lim Khim Wah) and mixed doubles (Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing).
