KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Bing-Xuan has again proven that disability is not inability.
The wheelchair-bound lass, who had faced many rejections, did not give up hope on her path to pursue higher education and she graduated with flying colours as a trained accountant yesterday.
She obtained a Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) of 3.97 in Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) from the Multimedia University (MMU).
Tan, 23, said she was happy and grateful for the help given to her – from her family, the government agencies, university staff and fellow schoolmates.
“My philosophy in life is to always be grateful for what I have and never give up easily when facing any obstacles,” she said.
Tan said her major source of inspiration came from the people with different types of disabilities and that she was motivated by those who succeeded in life.
Tan, who was suffering from generalised dystonia – a type of neurological movement disorder – since she was 10, was in the media spotlight five years ago after her application was rejected by a local university despite scoring 10As in SPM.
After her predicament was highlighted by The Star, it drew the attention of the then Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and MMU, which offered her a place to study accountancy.
Tan was among three disabled students at the university’s three-day convocation ceremony, which ends tomorrow.
The other two are Lina Athirah Kamarudin and S. Vinod.
Lina, who suffers from cerebellar degenerative disease, said physical disabilities and medical conditions were no barriers to academic success.
“I thank my mother who has worked really hard to raise the seven of us with incomparable patience and unconditional love,” said the graduate of Business Administration (Honours) Management with Multimedia.
Vinod said it was the spirit of never giving up that made him pull through the journey to complete his Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Analytical Economics course.
