Pharmacy owner lives in fear over ex-partner’s RM500,000 debt

KUALA LUMPUR: A suspected loan shark smashed the glass panel and door of a pharmacy at a busy commercial area here.
His act was captured by a closed-circuit television camera outside the shop in Puchong.
He was believed to be targeting a former partner who had run away with a debt of at least RM500,000, said pharmacist Foong Seong Heng, 32, who owns the pharmacy.
He said his former partner, who sold off his shares in the business in May, could not be contacted.
“I only found out about his debt when a man, in his 20s, came looking for him on Aug 11 and demanded settlement of the RM500,000 debt.
“When he could not find him, the loan shark left but threatened me,” Foong said.
About a week later, Foong was informed that his shop had been splashed with red paint. And around 8pm on Saturday, Foong heard the loud noise of glass shattering outside the premises.
He rushed out to see a man smashing the glass panel with a baseball bat.
“The man ran off, leaving behind a few pieces of paper with the borrower’s picture on them,” he added.
Foong has lodged police reports over the three cases.
Fearing that he and his family were at risk, he also sought help from MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong.
On Sunday, the borrower’s father held a press conference to announce that he was cutting ties with his son, whom he claimed was a habitual gambler.
The father from Malacca said he had helped the 31-year-old pay off RM800,000 in debts over the past eight years.
Chong said he had attended to 398 cases related to loan sharks this year and the debts amounted to more than RM48mil.
