KUALA LUMPUR: Buoyed by a big leap in the world rankings, mixed doubles shuttlers Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying are eyeing a good showing in the Vietnam Open Grand Prix.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying have moved up nine rungs to No. 19 in the world, thanks to a third-round finish in the recent World Championships in Jakarta.
They can make it to the top 15 if they reach the final of the Grand Prix tournament.
Liu Ying-Peng Soon began the year ranked 268th, following a long break from competition last year.
The Malaysians will face Irfan Fadhilah-Weni Anggraini of Indonesia in the first round on Wednesday. If they win, they’ll likely face second seeds Praveen Jordan-Debby Susanto, also of Indonesia, next.
“We’re delighted to break into the top 20 in just seven months. We have a chance to make the top 15 ... but it will be tough,” said Liu Ying.
“Our opening round in Vietnam is tricky. Irfan-Weni have already won a title (the 2015 Li Ning International Series), so we cannot underestimate them.
“It will be even tougher against world No. 10 Jordan-Debby.”
The other Malaysian mixed doubles pair in the tournament are Tan Chee Tean-Shevon Lai Jemie, whose first match will be against qualifiers Bodin Isara-Savitree Amitrapai of Thailand.
