KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin (pic) will meet the party’s top leadership to highlight issues such as political donations and 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) raised by the grassroots.
Khairy said he would meet party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi after the Umno supreme council meeting on Sept 9.
The views were raised during recent divisional meetings and surfaced in their resolutions, he said.
“We want to highlight these issues as they are being discussed not only by the grassroots but also youths outside the party.
Khairy also said the views from the Youth division meetings would not be screened and that everything would be presented in the form of motions to the leadership. He said so far, 182 Youth divisions had held their meetings and nine more would do so by this weekend.
Umno Youth, he said, still respected and acknowledged Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the party’s number two.
He said this followed a motion by Keningau Umno to nominate Dr Ahmad Zahid for the deputy presidency in the next party election.
Muhyiddin was dropped as deputy prime minister and Dr Ahmad Zahid was appointed to the post following a Cabinet reshuffle last month.
“The deputy president’s post is elected, not appointed. Our stand is that Youth still acknowledges and respects Muhyiddin as the deputy president,” he said.
On calls from the grassroots for the party to cancel its decision to postpone election for 18 months, Khairy said this would be decided when all divisions had held their meetings.
“For now, we need to abide with the decision by the supreme council but since there are differing views from the grassroots, we will wait for all the division meetings to end.
“We will see how many Youth members feel the same before deciding on the matter.”
