THE sixth Perhentian Island Challenge to be held at Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu, from Oct 9 to 11 has been changed to an individual competition instead of a team event in an effort to keep it interesting.
The challenge, organised by PIC Adventures, has so far received encouraging response with more than 500 participants registered.
It is the biggest event since its inception in 2004, when only 103 participants registered.
There are four categories — men’s elite, women’s elite, men’s novice and women’s novice — this time around.

Race coordinator Chan Chee Seng said the event would involve disciplines like cross-country running, swimming, water orienteering, diving, coast orienteering and beach fun races.
“To make the race exciting, we organised the event for individuals and not as a team event.
“We want to keep participants guessing on the course each time they compete at our event.
“In fact, we will only reveal the race course a few minutes before the start,” he said.
PIC Adventures president Ken Cheah said foreign participants from the United States, Kenya, New Zealand, Taiwan and Singapore had confirmed their participation.
“A total of RM50,000 in prizes and cash are offered to participants.
“We will also have lucky draw prizes offering a Suunto watch to a lucky winner,” he said.
The champion in the elite group will get RM2,500 and other prizes, while the runner-up and third placed will get RM2,000 and RM1,500, respectively.
For the novice group, the winner will receive RM1,300.
The second prize winner will get RM1,000 while third placed will receive RM800.
Among the sponsors are Bubu Long Resort, Ripcurl, Redbull, Spritzer, 100Plus, PowerBar, Brooks, Suunto, Coleman, Deuter and UFL Fitness and Leisure Sdn Bhd.
